Despite three years of supply issues at the start of its life cycle and increased competition, Sony’s PlayStation 5 is still hot on the heels of the sales pace set by its wildly popular PS4.

Sony posted its Q4 earnings report on Thursday and shares jumped more than 10% on a bevy of promising pointers from the tech giant, including the fact that the PS5 sold 9.5 million units in the holiday quarter, after its souped-up $700 PS5 Pro hit shelves in November.

That’s the PS5’s best quarter ever, up about 16% from last year’s holiday season. It brings the PS5’s lifetime total to 75 million units sold.

Though it’s still falling short of the PS4 (the No. 5 bestselling console of all time) at the same point in its life cycle, the quarter brings the PS5’s 2024 calendar year sales to 20.2 million units.

That’s more than this year’s combined sales of both the Nintendo Switch (11.5 million units) and Microsoft’s Xbox consoles (roughly 5 million units per estimates).
“in my first multifamily property I acquired in Northeast Ohio and moved into, I tried working with a tenant/neighbor who would pay me $100 here and there as he got it, always late and always excuses. Then one Saturday after I worked all morning and into the afternoon, I returned to the complex and my tenant and I spoke. I asked him what he was up to on such a beautiful day and he said he was going to return three games he had rented that he did not care for. All whilst owing back rent. That was my first three day notice and eviction proceedings and it helped me become a better landlord.” ~ Sean Dreznin
Sherwood writer Max Knoblauch explored how Sony weathered a rocky year for the gaming industry while continuing its push into turning videogames into films and TV shows, and why this year — the 30th anniversary of the PlayStation — could be even better for the company.
